OPINIONS
Million Dollar Manby THS Media Walter Canady
Oct. 10 was the 20th year anniversary of the million march. This historical day was actually dated on Oct. 16, 1995, where there was a sea of black men, these men stood for 10 hours laughing , crying and interacting with each other. This gathering was organized and hosted by the Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Though organized by the Nation of Islam this occasion would gather all religions and classes of the black nation. This day was for reconciliation for the black culture. This day not only unified black men and the leaders of the the different communities but it also showed the world the strength and perseverance of a culture that has been debased.

Muslim Perspectiveby THS Media Melynda Robinson
"Whosever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if they have killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if they have saved the life of all mankind…” (Quran 5:32).
The majority of non-Arab or Muslim people will use the term ISIS. To Muslims, we call them Daesh. The term Daesh means “one who crushes something underfoot”.The Daesh hate being called Daesh. To Muslims, when people associate us with the Daesh, it’s an insult. Regarding this, I think dropping the first I in ISIS is the best solution, because nothing is Islamic about them. Just because a group of people claim to be doing these terrorists acts in the name of their religion, doesn’t mean this is actually true. |

Cecil The Lion:True Ambivalenceby THS Media Abygai Pena
“You come at us with stone, with spear, with arrow, with knife, with gun, poison, traps of every deviously horrific form your minds can imagine and your opposable thumbs can help you to build. You come at us with bulldozers and other heavy equipment, explosives, and dams, scalpels and drugs, electrodes, prods and prongs and probes, hammers and captive bolt pistols, whips and chains and indifference.”
This poem was written by Barry Kent MacKay titled “We Are The Others” whose main purpose was to pay homage though a poetry piece in memory of Cecil the Lion and other voiceless creatures who are poached and wrongfully hunted while on the verge of extinction. |
Pros and Cons of 8-hour daysby THS Media Greg Miranda
and Abygia Pena |
What’s a new school year without a few changes right, with the addition to our new Truman staff members as well as the new yet confusing lunch schedule, the biggest change comes to our courses and schedules. When you look at that white sheet that you got during enrollment with all your personal information at the top and your courses down below, you’ll see an newly added eighth hour to the school day.
Whether you're a fan of any of the changes in the 2015-2016 school year, the Independence School District, and more importantly Truman High School all have good intentions in mind. “The eight hour day was implemented to have students would have more chances to take more credits and more classes,” head principal Pamela Boatright said. |
Most of us feel completely overwhelmed at school. In fact, Tim Elmore from “Psychology Today” write about his work with adolescents since 1979 and states
“I believe that students are more ‘stressed out’ today than at any other time I began working with them.” You see, stress, in the simplest terms can be described as a condition in which an individual experiences challenges to physical or emotional well-being that overwhelm their coping capacity. For many students school is a big trigger of stress, with grades, friends and extracurricular activities. It can often be too much for a lot of us and adding a extra class period cannot be helping alleviate the pain and suffering felt by the masses, eight periods is no opiate. |
