FBI Robotics wins KC Regional!
Congratulations to the FIRST Bots of Independence Robotics team, who, for the second year in a row, won the Greater Kansas City Regional Tournament this weekend! Their win earned the FBI a spot at the World Championships in St. Louis, from April 22-25.
This year’s game was built around a Recycling theme, and involved building stacks of plastic shipping totes, topped with recycling containers (aka. plastic trash barrels). The crates were worth 2 points each, and if a barrel were placed on top of a stack, it tripled the points. The FBI specialized in “barreling”, picking up barrels and “topping off” the stacks. We also had the highest ranked Human Player, David Bogue, who threw pool noodles, called “litter”, over 30 feet to the other side of the field, for 4 points each. Because the robot looked like a guillotine, the Competition bot was named “Marie”, and the Practice bot was named “Antoinette.” |
The FBI (Team 1723) ended qualification rounds ranked 10th out of 54 teams, and joined forces with teams from Blue Springs (1785) and Olathe Northwest (1710) to form the 6th ranked alliance for Finals. Though underdogs, the teams came up with a strong, cooperative strategy. 1785 and 1710 built stacks of 5 crates, while 1723 placed barrels on top. That strategy, and the fine work of 1723’s drivers, Eli Freeman and Jacqueline Stock, carried them through quarter- and semi-finals, before knocking off the #1 alliance 134-85 and 134-110 in the finals.
